The International Contrast Ultrasound Society (ICUS) is asking the U.S. Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS) to assign non-cardiac CEUS billing codes to a higher payment code.
The purpose of the request is to facilitate adequate reimbursement and provide clinical coherency,
consistent with the benefits of CEUS to patients and health care systems.
In a letter submitted electronically to CMS on August 26, 2025, the ICUS Board of Directors asked
CMS to reassign CPT Code 76978 and CPT Code 76979 from APC 5571 (Level 1 Imaging with
Contrast) to APC 5572 (Level 2 Imaging with Contrast). ICUS is not seeking a change in
reimbursement for cardiac CEUS.
