Special Issue on Ultrasound Contrast Agents and Targeted Drug Delivery

(Submission Deadline: December 1, 2011)

Targeted drug delivery is one of the most important, but not yet attained, goals of modern pharmacology and therapy. In recent years, new promising possibilities for targeted drug delivery have been discovered that can be realized by using microbubble ultrasound contrast agents. These agents can carry drugs and selectively adhere to specific sites in the human body. This capability provides great possibilities for localized drug delivery in combination with a phenomenon know as sonoporation. Sonoporation is a process in which ultrasonically activated contrast agent microbubbles, pulsating nearby biological barriers (cell membrane or endothelial layer), increase their permeability and thereby enhance the penetration and the extravasation of external substances. In this way drugs can be delivered inside individual cells without serious consequences for the cell viability. At present, however, there is no consensus on the underlying mechanisms of sonoporation. We invited investigators to contribute original research and review articles that will stimulate further efforts to understand the phenomenon of sonoporation. We are interested in studies covering all aspects of the dynamics of ultrasound contrast agents associated with targeted drug delivery by sonoporation. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

* Recent experimental observations on sonoporation

* Identification of physical and cellular mechanisms of sonoporation

* Role of different effects (acoustic microstreaming, microjets, shock waves, etc.) in sonoporation

* Experimental and theoretical investigations on the dynamics of contrast microbubbles near biological barriers

* Development and experimental validation of theoretical and numerical models for physical processes associated with sonoporation

* Analysis of the state of the art and growing trends in fields associated with targeted drug delivery by sonoporation

Manuscript preparation and submission:

All contributions should be submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, Manuscript Central at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tuffc-ieee. When submitting, authors should select the Manuscript Type, "Special Issue Papers". In addition, enter the name of this special issue in the field "If the manuscript type is 'Special Issue', please enter the name of the Special Issue". It is important that your manuscript is distinguished from a regular submission. In the first paragraph of "Comments to Editor-in-Chief", you should state that the submission is intended for the Special Issue on Ultrasound Contrast Agents and Targeted Drug Delivery. All manuscripts are subject to the normal peer-review process.
